LANETT -- In a spirit of
trying to stop crime in its tracks, residents of the Lanett mill village have
organized a Neighborhood Watch program for their residential area.
This anti-crime effort has proven effective in many other residential areas.
Several mill village residents have headed up a cause of making the mill
village a safer place to be. Following a discussion with law enforcement
officials at city hall on what could be done, they've opted for a Neighborhood
Watch.
A program that involves the joint efforts of the police department and
members of the community, Neighborhood Watch is designed to enhance
neighborhood security, heighten the community's power of observation and
encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors.
The idea for the program began after Lurlie Jennings appeared before the city
council on Jan. 7 to discuss problems in the neighborhood.
Among her complaints were stray dogs that wouldn't let her leave her porch,
people walking up and down the streets at night, youths causing property
damage and people lining up across the streets and blocking traffic as they
walked down the street.
One of Jennings'
reasons for getting involved in the Neighborhood Watch program is to help the
neighborhood build a positive relationship with the police department. It's
also an effective means, she believes, of helping to identify the problems
residents are having.
